Music is much more than just the first year of beginning band that "that school is making my child take". Current research in areas as diverse as neuroscience and kinesiology continue to point to the lifelong benefits of playing music.
"Ongoing research continues to show a direct correlation between length of fine arts instruction and increased proficiency on standardized tests, such as the SAT and ACT which help show a student's preparedness for the rigors of college. But it doesn't just stop there. Music continues to enrich and help academic studies, even at the college level. One study showed that undergraduate music majors surpassed even biochemistry as the number one undergraduate degree accepted into our nation's medical schools. Research is also showing tremendous potential in the treatment of later-in-life conditions, as well. Dementia and Alzheimer's are currently two of the areas seeing direct benefit from music therapy.
